Get in touch

At the Priora International Medical Center, Urology is a combination of top expertise, state-of-the-art technology and individualized care. Our department covers the entire spectrum of urological conditions – from preventive examinations and minimally invasive procedures to urological oncology and robotic surgery. Under the leadership of M.Sc. sc. Tomislav Kalem, MD, an internationally trained and proven expert, developed a department where precise diagnostics, safe procedures and quick recovery are the standard of everyday practice.

Mr. sc. Tomislav Kalem – Head of the Department of Urology, Urological Oncology and Robotic Surgery

Mr. sc. Tomislav Kalem, MD, is a Croatian-German urologist with an impressive international career. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagreb, completed his medical studies in Osijek (1987), and obtained his master’s degree in 1994 in Zagreb. He began his specialization in urology in 1991 in Osijek, and completed it in 1998 in Frankfurt.

During his training, he worked and interned in Bern, Berlin, Karlsruhe and Fulda, where, after his specialist exam, he headed the Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology at the Clinic and then served as Deputy Director (until 2005). From 2005 until the end of 2023, he ran a private practice with 22 beds and a private department at the Lauterbach Hospital (Germany).

Urologist Tomislav Kalem participated in the conference “Croatian Immigration and Economic Development: Specificities and Opportunities”, organized by the Ministry of Demography and Immigration, and held on Tuesday at the Economic Center of Osijek-Baranja County in Osijek.

Kalem, who himself returned to Croatia precisely because of Priora, after three decades of training, working and living in Germany, spoke on the panel “Return and immigration to Slavonia, Baranja and Srijem – development investments and potentials”. You can read more here.

At the end of 2023, he was appointed Director of the Priora International Medical Center and Head of the Department of Urology, Urological Oncology and Robotic Surgery. Historic breakthrough: On June 3, 2024, Dr. Kalem performed the first robot-assisted radical prostatectomy in the Republic of Croatia using the Da Vinci system, thus opening a new chapter in modern urology in the region at the Priora International Medical Center.
Thanks to the introduction of Da Vinci Xi, Mona Lisa Dx Biobot, Histolog, HoLEP and PDD technologies, the most modern urology department in the region was created, with an emphasis on precision, safety and functional recovery.

Assistant Professor, Dr. Sc. Ivan Radoja – urology specialist and expert in neurourology and urodynamics

Doc. prim. dr. sc. Ivan Radoja is a specialist in urology and a subspecialist in neurourology and urodynamics, with clinical and academic experience from KBC Osijek and abroad. He holds the international certificate “Certificate in Urodynamics” (Bristol Urological Institute, UK), with advanced training in urodynamics in the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic. He is an active assistant professor and research associate in biomedicine; in 2019 he defended his doctorate on the impact of urinary incontinence on the quality of life of women.

At IMC Priora, Dr. Radoja specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of functional urinary tract disorders: urinary incontinence, bladder emptying disorders, neurogenic bladder, chronic retention, overactive bladder, and LUTS in men and women.

Thanks to his expertise in urodynamic measurements and neurourology, he provides patients with accurate problem stratification and individualized treatment plans (conservative, minimally invasive, and surgical options), in close collaboration with the Department’s oncology and functional urology departments.

Why is urology at IMC Priora special?

A medical team in green uniforms uses a surgical robotic system in the operating room.
  • New generation technology. The integration of Da Vinci Xi robotic surgery enables millimeter precision, smaller incisions, fewer complications and faster recovery.
  • A revolution in prostate diagnostics. Mona Lisa Dx enables fusion biopsy (MRI/US), detects even the smallest lesions and shortens the procedure, with fewer unnecessary samples.
  • Intraoperative safety. The histologist enables ultra-fast pathohistological confirmation of whether the tumor has been completely removed (in minutes), which increases the radicality and safety of the procedure.
  • Experience and mentorship. The first surgeries were conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Georg Schön, one of the European leaders with thousands of robotic surgeries.

Proven practice and patient trust. Patients come from all over Croatia, Europe, and even the Middle East and Brazil – because of the results, approach, and technology.

Prevention and early screening (PSA, ultrasound, MRI, fusion biopsy)

Advanced diagnostics and treatment. Early detection of prostate cancer has been proven to increase the chances of cure. The program includes:

  • PSA test and urological examination,
  • targeted radiological treatment (ultrasound, MRI),
  • Prostate fusion biopsy (Mona Lisa Dx) – a more precise, faster and invasive approach.

Da Vinci Xi robotic surgery – the gold standard for the prostate

Radical prostatectomy – Da Vinci is a minimally invasive procedure that removes the prostate (with seminal vesicles and, if necessary, lymph nodes). Advantages:

  • less bleeding, less pain, smaller incisions,
  • shorter hospital stay (often discharged on the 4th–6th day)
  • preservation of continence and potency in a higher percentage (thanks to 3D/HD optics and precision of instruments)

HoLEP, PDD and functional urology

  • HoLEP (holmium laser) for prostatic hyperplasia – tissue ablation with excellent functional outcomes.
  • PDD (photodynamic diagnostics) increases the visibility of tumor changes in the bladder.
  • Functional urology (incontinence, neuromodulator) – individualized plans aimed at restoring quality of life.

Services and procedures at IMC Priora – from consultation to rehabilitation
