Vulvoscopy is an examination of the vulva/external genitalia using a colposcope. The colposcope is a special device with magnification and light that allows the gynecologist to observe the skin and mucosa of the vulva in great detail and detect changes that are often invisible to the naked eye. This examination provides precise and safe diagnostics and helps in the early detection of changes that may require further evaluation or treatment.
The procedure itself is quick, painless, and usually lasts only a few minutes. During vulvoscopy, the gynecologist may use special solutions or dyes that highlight possible changes on the skin and mucosa, making it easier to locate them and, if necessary, take targeted tissue samples for histological analysis. The examination is performed in a comfortable and discreet setting, and the procedure is non-invasive. The patient is positioned comfortably as for a standard gynecological examination. The gynecologist examines the vulva with a colposcope, which does not come into direct contact with the body.
Vulvoscopy is most often recommended in cases of suspicious changes, rashes, sores, warts, or changes in skin color on the vulva. This examination can also be useful for monitoring previously diagnosed conditions with a higher risk of developing vulvar cancer.
With regular vulvoscopy examinations, it is possible to recognize potential problems in time and prevent complications, which significantly contributes to preserving women’s health and quality of life. Vulvoscopy is a simple, safe, and effective method that is increasingly becoming part of modern gynecological practice, highlighting the importance of preventive care and early detection of changes on the female external genitalia.
