The HPV test detects the presence of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause cervical changes and lead to cancer. The test is performed by taking a cervical swab, similar to the Pap test, and is entirely painless. Today, it is often performed from the same sample as the Pap test, or if needed, it can be done later from a previously collected Pap sample.
It is recommended for women aged 30 to 64, and can be performed on its own or in combination with the Pap test. makes it possible to detect cervical changes early and prevent the development of cancer.
HPV, the most significant risk factor for cervical cancer, is most commonly transmitted through sexual contact. Around eight out of ten sexually active men and women will become infected with one or more HPV types at some point in their lives.
Besides cervical cancer, HPV infection can also cause other diseases and cancers, such as: vulvar and vaginal cancer in women, anal cancer, genital warts in both men and women.
HPV infection and its consequences can be prevented through vaccination (primary prevention), which is recommended for girls and boys before the onset of sexual activity. Vaccination is optional and free of charge between the ages of 9 and 25. Up to age 15: two doses are required. After 15: three doses within 12 months.
It is also advisable for women and men over 25, and it remains free of charge with a doctor’s recommendation in certain medical conditions for women.
