Sono-Hysterosalpingography

What is sono-hysterosalpingography and why Is It performed?

Sono-hysterosalpingography (sono-HSG) is an ultrasound-based method used to assess fallopian tube patency.

Unlike the classic HSG, which involves X-ray imaging, sono-HSG is performed exclusively with ultrasound, without radiation and with significantly less discomfort.

A small amount of fluid is gently introduced into the uterus, and the doctor uses an ultrasound to observe whether it passes through the fallopian tubes, indicating whether they are open and whether natural conception is possible.

How sono-hysterosalpingography is performed at IMC Priora

The procedure is simple, quick, and minimally invasive.

Procedure steps:

– A thin catheter is inserted into the uterine cavity

– A small balloon prevents the catheter from slipping out

– saline or ultrasound contrast is injected

– ultrasound tracks the flow of fluid through the fallopian tubes

– Patency is confirmed if the fluid is seen passing into the abdominal cavity

Signs of tubal blockage:

– fluid is not visible in the abdominal cavity

– The examination causes sharp, significant pain

Liječnik u bijeloj kuti izvodi ultrazvučni pregled trbuha na pacijentici koja leži na stolu, dok se slika pregleda prikazuje na monitoru u svijetloj ambulanti.

What to expect before, during, and after sono-hysterosalpingography

Important for patients:

– The examination lasts around 10 minutes

– discomfort is minimal (mild cramps or pressure)

– no anesthesia, no incisions, no recovery time

– Pain medication may be taken if needed

– after the procedure, a 20–30 minute rest is recommended

– Coming with an escort is advisable for a safe return home

Why do we perform this test?

Because sono-HSG provides immediate insight into whether natural conception is possible or whether assisted reproductive methods should be considered.
