Young doctors Lourdes Camacho from Mexico and Gregor Pungeršek from Slovenia spent several weeks at the International Medical Center Priora in Čepin, training under Prof. Dr. Sc. Milomir Ninković, one of the world’s leading plastic surgeons.

Gregor Pungeršek – focus on reconstructive microsurgery and hand surgery

Gregor Pungeršek graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ljubljana and is currently a resident in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Celje General Hospital.

“We perform a broad spectrum of plastic surgical procedures, with a particular emphasis on hand surgery. I first heard of Professor Ninković five years ago, and since then, I have followed his exceptional contribution to the field of reconstructive microsurgery with great respect. I first saw his work during a visit to Klinikum Bogenhausen in Munich a few years ago. I decided to come to Priora to deepen my knowledge under a professor regarded as one of the most respected and internationally recognized experts in reconstructive surgery. I consider working with such a professor an outstanding privilege and an opportunity for professional advancement,” emphasized Dr. Pungeršek, for whom this was his fourth visit to Priora in the past year and a half.

He adds that he came to Priora to deepen his theoretical and practical knowledge and to gain new experience in reconstructive surgery.

“It is vital to me to understand the nuances and the ‘small secrets’ of the surgical approach that can only be learned alongside a top surgeon such as Professor Ninković. I believe that my stay at Priora will provide me with valuable knowledge that I will be able to apply in my everyday work and further professional development,” said the 28-year-old physician.

In the future, he aims to continue developing within the broader field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, with a special interest in reconstructive microsurgery and hand surgery. He strives to gain as much knowledge and practical skill as possible so that, he notes, he can provide a high level of care to patients and contribute to the development of the profession in his environment.

Lourdes Camacho – an experience that goes beyond surgical techniques

Her peer, Lourdes Camacho from Mexico City, is currently a general surgery resident transitioning into plastic surgery.

“My practice includes general surgical care with an increasing focus on reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, particularly soft tissue reconstruction, trauma, and microsurgery. I first learned about Professor Ninković through his publications and his international reputation in reconstructive microsurgery, and also from plastic surgeons at my hospital who had the opportunity to meet him.”

“I contacted his team, and then I learned that he leads a program at Priora in Čepin. I saw this as a unique opportunity to learn directly from someone whose surgical philosophy and precision I deeply appreciate,” said Dr. Camacho.

This was her first visit to Croatia.

What she takes from IMC Priora – knowledge, inspiration, and standards of care

“It was a wonderful experience, and I felt very welcome from the moment I arrived—I truly enjoyed it. What I take with me from Priora goes beyond surgical techniques. Of course, I learned a great deal about surgical planning, decision-making, and the meticulous approach that defines Professor Ninković’s work. But I also take with me the importance of preparation, as well as the respect and care devoted to each patient,” emphasizes Dr. Camacho.

She adds that she was very pleased with the team dynamics—collaboration between the medical staff, both teams of nursing assistants and ward nurses, residents, and the administrative staff who ensured everything ran smoothly.

Their professionalism and warmth made this experience unforgettable. “I am leaving with knowledge, inspiration, and a renewed passion for reconstructive surgery. Priora offers a very unique combination: a high level of expertise within an environment that feels personal and highly attentive. Compared to similar private hospitals in Mexico City that see the same number of patients, Priora manages to maintain an exceptionally high level of quality and standards of patient care within its specific service niche, which speaks to its operating protocols and commitment to clinical excellence,” concludes Dr. Lourdes Camacho.
