Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ivan Karlak, head of the Orthopedics Department at the International Medical Center Priora in Čepin, spoke to Ordinacija.hr about the importance of joint health and explained how modern orthopedics today enables a full return to mobility and a high quality of life after joint replacement surgery.
Orthopedics today: restoring mobility with modern endoprostheses
With extensive experience in endoprosthetics, traumatology, and minimally invasive procedures, Dr. Karlak is among the leading experts in joint replacement surgery for the hip, knee, and shoulder. He notes that today’s endoprostheses are highly advanced, and patients return to their daily activities and even sports within just a few months after surgery.
Prevention through balance and movement
Dr. Karlak also emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy body weight in promoting joint health. Every extra kilogram, he explains, means up to four kilograms of additional load on the hips and knees. Maintaining a healthy body weight and regular physical activity are therefore key to preventing cartilage damage and the development of osteoarthritis.
Modern surgical techniques and materials in Croatia follow global trends, while minimally invasive approaches and robotic technology allow for faster recovery and a reduced risk of complications.
As a message to patients, Dr. Karlak highlights the importance of communication and timely consultation with a doctor: “Fear is smaller when you understand the procedure. The key is to know that life after surgery returns to normal.”
