In his clinical work, Dr. Jovanovac focuses particularly on infertility evaluation, polycystic ovary syndrome, menopausal symptoms, and contraception.

Dr. Marko Jovanovac, a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics and a subspecialist in human reproduction, has joined the gynecology team at IMC Priora. He brings extensive experience in women’s reproductive health, gynecological endocrinology, and human reproduction.

He graduated from the University of Zagreb School of Medicine. He built his career at the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Vinkovci General Hospital, where he worked for fifteen years.

In his clinical practice, he is particularly dedicated to infertility diagnostics, polycystic ovary syndrome, menopausal symptoms, and contraception.

Advanced diagnostic methods at IMC Priora

“Younger patients most often come due to menstrual cycle irregularities, frequently linked to endocrinopathies such as polycystic ovary syndrome—conditions that, in addition to health issues, often involve aesthetic challenges such as excessive hair growth, hair loss, and obesity,” says Dr. Jovanovac.

Patients also seek his guidance when choosing long-term contraception. Options include oral hormonal contraception or local methods such as a hormonal intrauterine device or a copper IUD. Most, he notes, opt for a hormonal IUD (Levosert, Mirena) because it provides reliable protection against unwanted pregnancy, while also reducing heavy menstrual bleeding and preventing anemia.

At IMC Priora, Dr. Jovanovac will place particular emphasis on systematic infertility evaluation.

“Many women lose valuable time before targeted diagnostics begin and enter assisted reproduction too late. At IMC Priora, we can quickly rule out the main causes of infertility, treat milder disorders, and refer patients on time for more advanced treatment — improving their chances of successful conception,” he explains.

Hysteroscopy and laparoscopy

Among invasive diagnostic methods in infertility workup, the first and most important step is assessing fallopian tube patency — hysterosalpingography. At IMC Priora, this examination is performed under ultrasound guidance using the sono-hysterosalpingography technique.

This diagnostic method determines whether the fallopian tubes are open and whether natural conception is possible, either through intercourse or later intrauterine insemination. If the tubes are found to be blocked, treatment proceeds toward IVF to avoid losing time on unsuccessful attempts at spontaneous conception.

“The procedure involves inserting a thin catheter into the uterine cavity, followed by inflating a small balloon that prevents the catheter from slipping out. Through a second channel, a contrast medium — usually saline or a specialized ultrasound contrast agent — is injected. A transvaginal ultrasound is then used to observe the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes and track the flow of the contrast. If the contrast passes freely through the tubes and into the abdominal cavity, the tubes are patent. If the procedure is excruciating and the contrast is not seen exiting into the abdominal cavity, the tubes are considered non-patent,” explains Dr. Jovanovac.

This examination does not require anesthesia — at most, mild pain medication.

“If diagnostic evaluation reveals reproductive tract conditions that can be treated surgically, we manage them using minimally invasive procedures such as hysteroscopy and laparoscopy,” he concludes.
