A new urological examination<\/a><\/strong> is now available at IMC Priora<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 voiding cystourethrography (VCUG). This is a radiological examination of the urinary bladder and the lower urinary tract in children and adults. The procedure reveals whether vesicoureteral reflux is present, i.e., the backward flow of urine from the bladder into the ureters and, in more severe cases, up to the kidneys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VCUG detects vesicoureteral reflux<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vesicoureteral reflux <\/strong>can increase the risk of recurrent urinary tract infections and kidney damage, especially in children. Likewise, the consequences of untreated reflux in adulthood may include reduced kidney function, high blood pressure as a result of kidney damage, kidney failure in more severe and long-standing cases, delayed growth in children, and complications during pregnancy. It is therefore essential to detect it in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diagnostic evaluation is recommended for children with urinary tract infections<\/strong>, particularly during the first year of life, when the consequences of infection can be most serious. The most reliable diagnostic method is VCUG, which uses X-ray imaging<\/strong> and a contrast agent<\/strong> to examine the bladder and urethra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How is the VCUG examination performed?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A catheter, a thin, soft tube, is inserted into the urethra, and the bladder is filled with liquid contrast agent through the catheter. Once the bladder is full, an image is taken. The child then urinates on the examination table, and another image is taken during urination. The examination takes 15 to 30 minutes<\/strong> and is not painful, although mild discomfort may be felt during insertion of the catheter. After the child urinates, the catheter is removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the patient has a urinary tract infection on the day of the examination, the procedure will be postponed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
