This diagnostic method determines whether the fallopian tubes are open and whether natural conception is possible, either through intercourse or later intrauterine insemination. \u201cThe procedure involves inserting a thin catheter into the uterine cavity, followed by inflating a small balloon that prevents the catheter from slipping out. Through a second channel, a contrast medium \u2014 usually saline or a specialized ultrasound contrast agent \u2014 is injected. A transvaginal ultrasound is then used to observe the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes and track the flow of the contrast. If the contrast passes freely through the tubes and into the abdominal cavity, the tubes are patent. If the procedure is excruciating and the contrast is not seen exiting into the abdominal cavity, the tubes are considered non-patent,\u201d explains Dr. Jovanovac.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This examination does not require anesthesia<\/strong> \u2014 at most, mild pain medication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
