It is marked on the initiative of the Global Initiative for Asthma on the first Tuesday of May each year, starting in 1998, with the aim of raising awareness about asthma as one of the most common chronic respiratory diseases and emphasizing the importance of timely diagnosis and proper treatment. The goal is to educate the public, empower patients in managing their condition, and encourage healthcare systems to improve access to therapy and adequate care.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that causes shortness of breath, coughing, and chest tightness. It can be relatively mild, but it can also be life-threatening. It is important to note that even individuals with rare symptoms can experience severe asthma attacks if the disease is not properly managed.

It is estimated that more than 260 million people worldwide live with asthma. Although it can be controlled, it still causes hundreds of thousands of deaths each year—mostly due to inadequate diagnosis or treatment.

It is a myth that asthma occurs only in childhood – it can affect all age groups.
