The global campaign under the slogan \u201c<em>United by Unique<\/em>\u201d highlights that behind every diagnosis there is a one-of-a-kind human story\u2014an individual with specific fears, social circumstances, and life conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The four main cancer sites<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>World Health Organization estimates from 2022<\/strong>, <strong>20 million<\/strong> people are diagnosed with cancer each year, and <strong>9.7 million<\/strong> people die from the disease. More than <strong>70%<\/strong> of cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/stampar.hr\/hr\/novosti\/svjetski-dan-borbe-protiv-raka-4-veljace\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.priora.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/svjetski-dan-borbe-protiv-raka-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ljubi\u010dasta satenska vrpca za podizanje svijesti u obliku petlje na bijeloj pozadini.\" class=\"wp-image-10046\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.priora.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/svjetski-dan-borbe-protiv-raka-1.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/www.priora.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/svjetski-dan-borbe-protiv-raka-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <strong>European Commission country cancer reports (2025) for EU countries<\/strong>, half of all cancer cases involve four main sites: <strong>colorectal cancer<\/strong>, <strong>lung cancer<\/strong>, <strong>prostate cancer<\/strong>, and <strong>breast cancer<\/strong>. Regarding risks and prevention, positive trends are visible in reduced smoking and alcohol consumption. However, excess body weight and obesity are an increasing problem. More than <strong>half of adults in the EU<\/strong> are overweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adopting healthy habits, such as <strong>not smoking<\/strong>, <strong>avoiding alcohol<\/strong>, <strong>maintaining a balanced diet<\/strong>, and <strong>being physically active<\/strong>, reduces not only the risk of cancer, but also the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory conditions. It is estimated that <strong>between 30% and 50% of all cancers can be prevented<\/strong> by changing lifestyle habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Did you know about cancer?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Between 50% and 90% of skin cancer cases<\/strong> are caused by excessive exposure to sunlight.<br>Around <strong>95% of people who died from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.priora.eu\/en\/departments\/internal-medicine\/pulmonology\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1623\"> lung cancer<\/a><\/strong> were smokers, according to data from the <strong>Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ)<\/strong>. Smoking also contributes to the development of cancers of the <strong>mouth<\/strong>, <strong>throat<\/strong>, <strong>larynx<\/strong>, <strong>bronchi<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.priora.eu\/en\/treatments\/gastroenterology\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"6038\">digestive system<\/a>,<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.priora.eu\/en\/departments\/urology\/radical-prostatectomy-da-vinci\/\" data-type=\"treatment\" data-id=\"4304\">prostat<\/a>e<\/strong>,<strong> kidneys<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.priora.eu\/en\/treatments\/gynecology\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"7037\">breast<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>cervix<\/strong>, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.priora.eu\/en\/treatments\/gynecology\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/www.priora.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/MBP69918-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Pacijent razgovara sa zdravstvenim djelatnikom koji dr\u017ei anatomski model debelog crijeva u ordinaciji.\" class=\"wp-image-9808\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts note that <strong>30\u201360 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day<\/strong> reduces the risk of colorectal cancer by <strong>30\u201340%<\/strong> compared to a sedentary lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>European Code Against Cancer \u2013 how to reduce your risk<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>European Code Against Cancer<\/strong> consists of <strong>14 recommendations<\/strong> based on current scientific evidence on personal behavioural factors, environmental factors, and medical interventions. The Code is intended for individuals and policymakers, and provides a roadmap for reducing cancer risk, addressing misconceptions about cancer, and improving public health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>Do not smoke.<\/strong> Do not use any form of tobacco or vaping products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>Do not allow smoking<\/strong> in your home or car. Support smoke-free policies at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Maintain a healthy body weight.<\/strong> Take steps to avoid or control overweight and obesity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 limit foods high in calories, sugar, fat, and salt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 limit sugary drinks; mostly drink water and unsweetened beverages<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 limit ultra-processed foods<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obesity is linked to many malignant diseases, including <strong>prostate cancer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> <strong>Be physically active<\/strong> in everyday life. Limit the time you spend sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> <strong>Eat a healthy diet.<\/strong> Make whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and fruit the main part of your daily diet. Limit red meat and avoid processed meat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> <strong>Avoid alcohol.<\/strong> If you drink alcohol of any kind, do so in moderation. Not drinking alcohol reduces cancer risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> <strong>Breastfeeding reduces the mother\u2019s cancer risk.<\/strong> Breastfeed your child for as long as possible. Breastfeeding benefits both mother and child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong> <strong>Avoid excessive sun exposure<\/strong>, especially for children. Use sun protection. Do not use sunbeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9.<\/strong> <strong>Follow health and safety instructions at work<\/strong> to protect yourself from cancer-causing substances. Learn about workplace cancer risks and ask your employer to protect you. Seek professional help to measure levels and reduce them if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11.<\/strong> <strong>Take steps to reduce exposure to air pollution:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 use public transport and walk or cycle instead of driving<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 choose low-traffic routes when walking, cycling, or exercising<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 keep your home smoke-free, avoid burning materials such as coal or wood<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013 support policies that improve air quality<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>12.<\/strong> <strong>Protect yourself against infections that can cause cancer.<\/strong> Include your children in vaccination programmes against <strong>hepatitis B<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.priora.eu\/en\/treatments\/hpv\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"7908\">human papillomavirus (HPV)<\/a><\/strong>. Hepatitis B or C viruses are linked to liver cancer, and HPV to cervical cancer. The bacterium <strong>Helicobacter pylori<\/strong> increases the risk of stomach cancer\u2014get tested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>13.<\/strong> <strong>Hormone replacement therapy increases the risk of certain cancers.<\/strong> If, after a thorough discussion with your healthcare professional, you decide to use HRT for menopause symptoms, limit its use to the shortest possible duration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>14.<\/strong> <strong>Take part in organised screening programmes for early cancer detection:<\/strong><br>\u2013 colorectal cancer<br>\u2013 breast cancer<br>\u2013 cervical cancer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Remember: <\/strong>prevention is the best medicine.
